The Quietest railway station in the country

I wrote all about Reddish South Station back in May 2013 so I'll refer you back there for more information. I was back there again a week last Friday and noticed that the Friends of Reddish Station have erected a new picket fence and sign in front of the mural.

As the timetable indicates only one train a week stops at Reddish South on the line from Stockport to Stalybridge and there is no return service. I had arrived at 10.10 to catch the 10.20 train.

The platform has been extended over the line that ran on the right where the "Friends of Reddish South Station" have planted a garden. No one else was waiting for the train and there isn't even a bench to sit on. At 10.45 I gave up and went to catch a bus.

I posted details of the individual panels of the mural in June 2013.

  1. Quite a lovely mural. With one train a week, you wonder what the point is to holding onto it.

  2. This all seems very odd. I guess those who come here never leave (or they all have cars)!

  3. Hi Gerald,

How disappointing for you. You show up on time, wait while standing, and finally give up and catch a bus! Oh, but I'm grateful you took some blue pictures; they're good ones, too! Thanks for sharing.

    Happy Blue Monday!

  4. I guess the Friends of Reddish South Station have not been able to increase the use of the station as you had hoped last year. Still a pity that more people don't see the mural. With trains not showing up.it will likely be even less. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.

  6. A rail line runs through our town, but they stopped passenger service decades ago. There is still about five or six trains a day that come through here, all freights. The loss of passenger service is sad.

  7. It's a bit sad that so few people use it, and that the service is so poor. I guess there are many better ways to get around than train in this area.

  10. the mural is neat! sorry about the 'missing' train, however. and the picket fence placed in front is interesting since you can just walk around it. :)

    thanks for linking!

  13. What a bummer that the train never arrived for you. Wonder what happened. The white picket fence I'm guessing is to keep the rocks from the hillside off the ground below? Very neat looking mural and it sure has changed since the 1989 photo.
